  3. For example, a change in the position or
  4. trophic level of one species affects all
  5. levels above it. Many biological systems are
  6. controlled by negative feedback. When enough
  7. of the hormone thyroxine has been released
  8. into the blood, the hormone adjusts its own
  9. level by `switching off' the gland that
  10. produces it. In ecology, as the numbers in a
  11. species rise, the food supply available to
  12. each individual is reduced. This acts to
  13. reduce the population to a sustainable level.
